New DURCO Pre-Coated (PC) Tubular Filter System
Ascension Industries Introduces New DURCO Pre-Coated (PC)Tubular Filter System to Remove Sub-Micron Particles or Compressible Solids in Continuous, On-Stream Flow Applications
(July 2006) - Ascension Industries, Inc., North Tonawanda, New York, announces the introduction of its new DURCO Pre-Coated (PC) Tubular Filter system. Incorporating pre-coat technology with the capabilities of backwashing tube filters, the DURCO Pre-Coated (PC) Tubular Filter System is designed to remove sub-micron particles or compressible solids in continuous, on-stream filtration applications.
The new filter design is based on a piping matrix consisting of multiple tubular filters and valves connected to common manifolds. Each tube filter septum pre-coated with porous filter aids, such as diatomaceous earth (diatoms), cellulose (wood-fiber), and pearlite (volcanic ash). The pre-coat materials can also be admixed into the filter feed system as a filter aid. These features combine the benefits of continuous stream filtration with filter aids to achieve extended filtration cycles, instant filtrate clarity, easy cake release, and the prevention of fouling and binding of filter septa.
The new DURCO Pre-Coated (PC) Tubular Filter System offers increased savings compared to typical pressure leaf filters as well as several other features and benefits:
- Individual tubes can be backwashed with process liquid or water using an external backwash source or the filtrate stream as an internal backwash source. Backwash is easily accomplished by using system pressure;
- Maximized cake space allows larger solids capacity through use of an undersized element;
- Individual tubes can be taken out of service, inspected, cleaned, and maintained while the rest of the system is operational;
- The filter system can be expanded by bolting additional tubes onto the system.
The new filter system features a compact design and requires minimal utility hook-ups. Operator attention is minimized, and there is no contact with the process liquid. The filter operates very well in biologically active environments and is less prone to biological binding since the pre-coat layer is replenished each cycle. Submicron particle removal down to .1 micron is achievable with the pre-coat system, depending on application, alleviating most bacteria and other harmful contaminants such as Cryptosporidium.
