Custom Vertical Pressure Leaf Filter
Ascension Industries recently won an order for the first Vertical Pressure Leaf Filter with Horizontal Filter Leaves.
Usually, with pressure leaf filters, the vessels are horizontal and the filter leaves are vertical. In this case the reverse was true. This posed some interesting challenges because of the different "pizza tray" looking filter leaves and the "cage" like support structure to hold the filter leaves. In spite of its different appearance there are a lot of good reasons to sell this type of filter, most important is that there is not a lot of competition and our design offers reliable self clearing.
- A few weeks after receiving the above order, a second order was received for (2) more, larger filters of the same design.
- The unique benefit of having horizontal filter leaves rather than the typical, vertical filter surface, is that the flow throught the horizontal filter can be substantially reduced or even stopped, without the filter "cake" falling.
The filter "cake" is the build up of filtered particles on the surface of the filter element. Since most filters have filter elements with vertical surfaces, they rely on a minimum forward flow through the filter surface to keep the "cake" on. In many applications the flow rate changes dramatically or stops depending on how consistently the process is running.
Without a horizontal filter surface, the customer is assured that the filter will continue to provide protection for the downstream equipment regardless of flow.
