15 June 2007 - Ascension Industries, Inc. - Durco Industrial Filtration Division recently announced two Durco Biodiesel Equipment deliveries within the US. With current strong business interest in the biodiesel energy sector, and exchange rates being so favorable for foreign orders, the company is also expecting significant European and Asian interest in their state-of-the-art Biodiesel Dry Washing & Filtration Systems.

The first shipment from Durco Biodiesel Equipment, a Biodiesel Dry Wash & Filtration Station (using Magnesol), is currently operating in the Upper Mid-West US. This turnkey biodiesel purification and clarification unit is capable of dry washing and filtering up to 1 Million gallons of crude biodiesel per year, for consumption as a renewable energy source. The unit consists of a dry washing tank and a biodiesel-rated Durco Sidebar Filter Press - specifically chosen for this project because of its’ low capital cost and low lead-time to operation. |

The second turnkey Magnesium Silicate Dry Wash & Filtration Station is scheduled to ship to a Texas-based biodiesel manufacturing plant this month. This automatic biodiesel processor consists of a mixing unit for dry washing the biodiesel and a biodiesel-rated Durco Sidebar Filter Press for final filtration / clarification. It is designed for production of up to 4 Million gallons of high quality biodiesel per year. |
Durco Dry Washing & Filtration Equipment For Biodiesel Plant
Washing & Filtration Of Biodiesel are critical process steps in the production of quality product. Both Durco Biodiesel Equipment units are capable of producing biodiesel that meets or exceeds ASTM D-6751 specifications (pilot testing is available to verify this for Your specific process). They use a unique dry washing technology that is a superior alternative to traditional water washing, or bubble washing.
This very efficient dry washing technique requires less production time and eliminates the expensive water treatment step that is required by the traditional washing processes. Dry washing also eliminates the need for vaporization equipment that would otherwise be required to remove the water from the biodiesel product. As a result, the Durco Biodiesel Dry Washing & Filtration System completely eradicates the process footprint and the excessive capital and operating costs normally associated with these other biodiesel washing techniques.
The Durco Industrial Filtration product line has been applied for many years in washing contaminants from waste vegetable oil (wvo). The new Durco Biodiesel Equipment range of products directly utilized that same engineering experience and expertise to develop and perfect these new systems that are specifically designed for dry washing and filtering of biodiesel. In fact, the same Durco system can be engineered to both to clean wvo feedstock in preparation for transesterification and also clarify the biodiesel stream following transesterification.
Durco Biodiesel Dry Washing & Filtration Systems are designed to handle a variety of flow rates in either continuous or in the batch processes. The automatic biodiesel processor is designed to efficiently mix magnesium silicate (Magnesol) adsorbent into a biodiesel reaction tank, and then automatically or manually purify the liquid biodiesel product through the integrated filter station.
Durco Biodiesel Process Filtration Technologies
Two different Durco Biodiesel Filtration Technologies are offered to achieve the purification and clarification step:
- Durco Biodiesel Filter Presses
– which deploy a special biodiesel filter cloth, specifically developed for optimum service in small to medium volume (<10M gal/yr) biodiesel plants at temperatures <170F.
- Durco Biodiesel Pressure Leaf Filters
– available either as cost-effective manual batch filters for small biodiesel startup plants, or as fully automated filtration stations for larger biodiesel refineries >10M gal/yr. Can be used for high temperature enhanced washing >170F.
Additionally, an optional Tubular Filter or Bag Filter unit can also be added downstream to effect a ‘final polishing’ filtration step.
